Official Cultivars
Cul-Ti-Vars [Cultivated Varieties] Below are a list of the officially registered and recognized cultivars.
[Dionaea ' Akai Ryu ' {R.Gagliardo}]
The trap, petiole and blade of this cultivar grow a dark red to burgundy in colour. This colouration is apparent all year round and green is only seen in the center of the plant in winter time where sunlight is scarce.
[Dionaea ' Big Mouth ' {T.Camilleri}]
This cultivar produces consistently very large traps on very short leaves in comparison to the typical variety.
[Dionaea ' Clayton's Red Sunset ' {C.Clayton}]
One of few cultivar which are genuinely always red and is fairly rare for this reason. Both traps and leaves are full red coloured and the leaf petiole is usually long and skinny.
[Dionaea ' Clumping Cultivar ' {D'Amato}]
The clumping cultivar forms clumped together leaves creating a tightly packed rosette of leaves and traps.
[Dionaea ' Cupped Trap ' {S.Stewart}]
The traps are joined at the tip to create a cupped like trap. The traps are still functional and capable of trapping prey. The traps cilia are coiled longer in the process.
[Dionaea ' Dentate ' {D'Amato}]
The trap spines are modified into short, toothlike triangles. The teeth are numerous and look similar to that of the teeth of a beartrap.
[Dionaea ' Dentate Traps ' {B.Meyers-Rice}]
Once a wild collected typical cultivar [Dionaea muscipula] plant was selected for registration because its spines were noticeably mutated. Instead of being long and filiform, the spines of Dentate Traps are short and triangular. This feature is not always apparent on small or immature traps, however the traps on mature plants after full seasons growth are unmistakably of Dentate cultivar.
[Dionaea ' Dente ' {D'Amato}]
This is a tissue formed cultivar, the teeth are irratically fused together by webbing.
[Dionaea ' Fused Tooth ' {D'Amato}]
Although this plant looks normal in the spring, later in the season it produces grotesquely malformed leaves where the teeth are erratically fused together by webbing. Odd, very odd.
[Dionaea ' Green Dragon ' {M.Erbacher & M.Stoeckl}]
Often incorrectly sold as Dionaea 'Red Dragon', the trap margins are green even under intense light. Very similar to the 'Red Dragon' variety in shape and size but with green trap exteriors, petioles and blades.
[Dionaea ' Holland Red ' {M.Erbacher & M.Stoeckl}]
A strong dark red formation, similar to that of the red/green dragon. Petioles in spring are short and in summer long. This cultivar produces large traps up to 3cm in summer with strong red/burgundy colouration.
[Dionaea ' Jaws ' {L.Song}]
The trap spines are short and pointy, the traps are big. It looks quite sharklike when the lobes have just closed!
[Dionaea ' Kinchyaku ' {K.Kondo}]
Kinchyaku translates to 'purse', which is a description which fits this cultivars imperfect trap design. The Kinchyaku inward facing cilia and a clam like trap shape.
[Dionaea ' Louchapates ' (R.Anfraix}]
also referred to as Dionaea 'Noodle Ladle'. The spines are multiply divided, and are placed on the very tip of the trap lobes, this characteristic is not seen in other cultivars..
[Dionaea ' Red Burgundy ' {M.Erbacher & M.Stoeckl}]
Another red clone, but supposedly more vigorous in cultivation. Often alot darker colourtion than other red varieties with a brownish tint.
[Dionaea ' Red Piranha ' {E.Read}]
This cultivar has the coloration of Dionaea 'Red Dragon' and the marginal spines of Dionaea 'Dentate Traps'. A very unique and attractive cultivar, favoured highly by growers worldwide.
[Dionaea ' Red Rosetted ' {D'Amato}]
The leaves are rosetted all year round, with red tinted traps.
[Dionaea ' Royal Red ' {AUPBR 464}]
A very red leaved cultivar. When grown in direct sunlight (with plenty of it) this cultivar has a very rich red colouring. It has medium length leaves with red typical shaped traps.
[Dionaea ' Sawtooth ' {B.Meyers-Rice}]
The trap spines are modified into short, sawtoothed edges.
